Matthew Hargreaves was born in London and began singing as a chorister at Westminster Abbey. He later went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Rudolph Piernay. At the GSMD Matthew won several prizes including an award from the Wolfson Foundation. Matthew was a finalist in the 1996 International Coloratura Singing Competition in Luxembourg and won the Decca Prize in the 1997 Kathleen Ferrier Award Competition.
Operatic engagements in the UK include Escamillo‚ Schaunard ‚ The Speaker The Magic Flute‚ Masetto‚ Ping and Sourin The Queen of Spades (Welsh National Opera); Escamillo (Royal Albert Hall); Zurga The Pearl Fishers (Opera Holland Park); Dandini (English Touring Opera) and Figaro Le nozze di Figaro (Savoy Opera). European engagements include Junius The Rape of Lucretia (Teatro Comunale di Firenze); Abbot Curlew River (Opera de Rouen); English Clerk Death in Venice and Traveller Curlew River (VARA concerts‚ Concertgebouw Amsterdam) and Alidoro La Cenerentola (Opera Theatre Company)‚ whilst engagements further afield include Polyphemus Acis and Galatea and Leporello (Opera Atelier‚ Toronto/ Marc Minkowski) and the title role Don Giovanni (Opera Atelier tour to Japan).
In concert and oratorio repertoire highlights with British orchestras include Handel’s Sing unto God (The Academy of Ancient Music/ Christopher Hogwood‚ BBC Proms) and Bosun Billy Budd (Hallé Orchestra/Kent Nagano‚ also recorded for Erato). Concert engagements overseas include Bach’s St John Passion (Music of the Baroque/ Nicholas Kraemer‚ Chicago)‚ Messiah (Göteborgs Symfoniker and English Concert/Trevor Pinnock‚ European tour).
Recordings include the Abbot Curlew River (Koch International); Rambaldo Maria di Rudenz and Ali Zoraida di Granata (Opera Rara)‚ Wagner Faust (Chandos) and music for an audio play of The Phantom of the Opera (BBC7 broadcast and CD).
