It is with the deepest sadness that I sit at my desk on the 21st August 2013‚ with the most solemn of all duties- announcing the sudden death‚ yesterday‚ of dear old Richard. A favourite client and great friend of longstanding‚ he will be sorely missed by all of us.

Richard was born in 1942‚ in Esher‚ Surrey. His father was a Chartered Accountant and the family were very involved with amateur music throughout Richard’s childhood. As a youngster he was a chorister at the Royal School of Church Music and then became a member of St George’s Singers in Esher. Although surrounded by music throughout his early life‚ he went into the City to train as a Chartered Accountant. However he was very soon “heard” and advised to think seriously about a singing career. This led to his time at the Royal Academy of Music‚ during which period he won the Richard Tauber Award‚ which in turn saw him carrying on with studies in Vienna. The biography below picks up the story from there! He is survived by Rosanne‚ who he married in 1967‚ and their only son Dominic‚ daughter-in-law Roz and grandson Casper. His family meant everything to him and he was never happier than when spending time with them‚ often with so many of we lucky friends and generous quantities of fine red wine‚ in their beautiful house in France (south of Tours). One of my abiding memories of that home was the full size metal statue of Richard‚ made to appear in an ENO production of Orpheus in the Underworld‚ designed by Gerald Scarfe‚ and which stands on guard in the garden. Marvellous!

He was an enormous man (6’7” to be precise) with a personality to match and he leaves an equally massive hole in all our lives. A wonderful raconteur‚ a truly gentle giant- those of us that can consider him our friend are very lucky indeed.

Richard Angas studied in London and Vienna. He worked for many years in Germany and at English National Opera where he was a company principal for fifteen years.
