Conal Coad received his first training in New Zealand and in the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music Opera School before joining Opera Australia‚ with whom he performed a number of roles before leaving for Europe in 1981. He settled in Belgium making his debut with the Opera de Wallonie in La Fanciulla del West. He has since sung with all the major companies of Belgium in the principal bass roles of Il Seraglio‚ The Marriage of Figaro‚ Rigoletto‚ I Vespri Siciliani‚ Nabucco‚ Il Trovatore‚ Lucia di Lammermoor and Lohengrin. In France he has sung in Fidelio at Bordeaux‚ Wurm Luisa Miller at Montpellier and‚ elsewhere in Europe and Israel‚ in Cendrillon‚ L’Elisir d’Amore‚ Rigoletto‚ Semiramide‚ The Marriage of Figaro‚ Aida and L’Italiana in Algeri. Notable concert engagements include work with all the major Australian orchestras‚ the Israel Philharmonic‚ at the Royal Opera House‚ Covent Garden as well as festivals in France‚ Belgium‚ Germany‚ Holland‚ Australia and New Zealand.
During 1995 Conal Coad sang Ramfis in the Paris Bercy production of Aida. Other appearances during that season included Il Seraglio‚ The Marriage of Figaro‚ and L’Italiana in Algeri in France‚ Turandot in New Zealand and Adriana Lecouvreur‚ Eugene Onegin and The Marriage of Figaro in Australia. His many recent roles for Opera Australia include Superintendent Budd Albert Herring‚ Bartolo and Don Magnifico La Cenerentola.
In 1996 Conal Coad was a principal guest for the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts where he has sung Dikoy Katya Kabanova‚ Rocco Fidelio‚ Janacek’s Glagolitik Mass and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony. Other notable operatic work in 1996 included a new production of Il Ritorno d’Ulysse in Patria at the Grand Theatre‚ Geneva. Since 1997 he has played the title role in Don Pasquale for Opera Queensland and the Opera of South Australia as well as numerous roles in Melbourne‚ New Zealand‚ Belgium and France.
Most recent engagements include Basilio‚ Waldner Arabella‚ Dansker‚ Dulcamara‚ Animal Tamer/ Acrobat Lulu‚ Don Magnifico‚ The Grand Inquisitor‚ Leporello‚ Friar Laurent Roméo et Juliette‚ La Roche Capriccio‚ The Mikado‚ Dulcamara L’Elisir d’Amore‚ Bartolo and Bottom Midsummer Night’s Dream in Australia‚ Baron Ochs Der Rosenkavalier at Opera North‚ Rocco Fidelio and Oroveso Norma for Opera Holland Park‚ Don Pasquale at Garsington‚ Commendatore and Sarastro in Portugal‚ title role Falstaff at Opera North and with Opera New Zealand‚ Dansker Billy Budd at Covent Garden and in Washington‚ Basilio and Dansker in Hamburg‚ Bottom in Madrid‚ Napoli and at La Fenice in Venice andTom Blunt Der Vampyr in Bologna.
This season’s and future plans include Swallow Peter Grimes in Napoli‚ Bartolo‚ Rocco and Bottom in Australia‚ Mustafa in New Zealand and Bartolo and Theseus Midsummer Night’s Dream at Garsington. Last season also saw him direct and sing the title role in Don Pasquale with NBR Opera New Zealand.
