Matthew was born in Geneva‚ of Anglo-Ghanaian descent and studied at the Royal College of Music in London‚ before reading music at Fitzwilliam College‚ Cambridge and later studying as a post-graduate at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After a 10-year career as an opera singer‚ he swiftly gained a reputation as a dynamic young conductor‚ praised by critics and described as a talent to watch. Matthew holds the ENO Mackerras Fellowship 2016-18 and is a ‘Newcomer’ nominee in the International Opera Awards 2017.

Most recent and upcoming engagements include Paul Bunyan English National Opera at Wilton’s Music Hall‚ La traviataLa RondineLa bohèmeLakmé and Il Barbiere di Siviglia for Opera Holland Park‚ Don Giovanni with Opera North‚ The Marriage of Figaro with English National Opera‚ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park and at the Royal Opera House‚ Texting Heer (workshop) for Royal Opera House‚ Pelléas et Mélisande (assistant & cover conductor) for Scottish Opera‚ Pelléas Unwrapped (an exploration of Pelléas et Mélisande) with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera‚ La BohèmeDon Giovanni and a Havergal Brian disc (assistant & cover conductor) for ENO. His debut studio album‚ Will Todd’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland‚ entered the official specialist classical chart at number one. The disc has been critically-acclaimed and has been played on BBC Radio 3.

Matthew has a long-standing association with Opera Holland Park‚ for whom he has conducted critically-acclaimed performances of La bohèmeLakméIl Barbiere di SivigliaLes Pêcheurs de Perles‚ Will Todd’s Alice’s Adventures in WonderlandGianni SchicchiZanettoRigoletto‚ and Fantastic Mr Fox. He was Chorus Master for OHP from 2009-2011‚ chorus-mastering eleven productions‚ and in 2012 he was appointed Music Director of the inaugural Christine Collins Young Artist Scheme.

Further engagements include La Traviata (Opera Lyrica)‚ The Yeomen of the Guard (Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company‚ National Festival Orchestra)‚ Strekosa I Muravej (Tête a Tête and Grimeborn festivals)‚ workshops for English National Ballet and Carmen with the Royal Opera House Community Chorus. Matthew mentors and coaches young musicians at Fitzwilliam College‚ Cambridge University.

Matthew regularly conducts opera galas‚ highlights including the Centenary Gala Concert and World War I Memorial Gala Concert at the Chelsea Flower Show. His work has taken him to eclectic festivals including Watercity‚ Camp Bestival‚ Harvest‚ and Wilderness . Matthew works regularly with the City of London Sinfonia‚ and he has conducted the Orchestra of English National Opera‚ the Orchestra of Scottish Opera‚ the National Festival Orchestra and the London Mozart Players.
